NOTE: Billy Baxter’s Letters is a short, late‑1890s collection of comic sketches in letter form by William J. Kountz Jr., originally written as advertising pieces for his hangover remedy “Red Raven Splits.” The letters are narrated by a fast‑talking character, Billy Baxter, writing in slangy, breezy vernacular to his friend “Jim” about nights out, gambling, high‑living, and their consequences, with the tonic worked in as a running gag cure for overindulgence
